Doomsday sayers

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

This is the time where doomsday sayers from religous groups will cash in to lead their flocks out of our petro addicted world.Unfortunately most comes in as opportunistic charismatic leaders.Even new age groups are pump up by the peak oil story.

Peak oil will come whether we like it or not, but how it turns out is anybody guess, scholars and experts can debate about it and write books predicting it, but life never move in a linear way.In a way, we hate them but can’t do without their sayings about the world to come.

Man always are looking for leadership even if they are a pack of wolves in sheeps clothings. It’s really no surprise to me if the born again movement is going to grow worldwide awaiting for some rapture in our fossil descent.

It’s true in a bleak world with low energy we need some kind of hope  , but man never change much and the false teachers giving solutions to our daily life will be plentiful by then,in return we will give them food ,gold & silver etc…the cycle repeats itself again.

The money and techno temples now man are worshipping may give way to new forms of edifice under energy pressures, idolatry never really went away, it just take on a different form supported by the same men that worshipped them.

So what if oil went over 90USD?

I was thinking that most drivers don’t really care about spot oil prices , life goes on for many of us especially for people like taxi drivers who depended on their vehicles for a living. They may grumble on about the government lack of power to cap the fuel price. But seriously no one really not the man in the street anyway have much control over the oil price.

So does gasoline prices really reflect on our rising crude oil cost.Latest statstic shown this was not really the case, as consumption are less due to high oil price tend to lead to a  not so high gasoline. You see we are still paying more just that it’s lesser than a few months back per gallon.

Why more? It’s more than last year per gallon, people tend to view gasoline prices in short term view for few months most of us anyway except maybe for oil analysts. This is a myopic vision that will not serve us well if oil contiune to move up.Then the gasoline  prices will move  up faster than what we can absorb.

As oil supplies gets tighter, I wonder how much will the gasoline goes up?5 dollars per gallon , 10 dollars or more? One thing for certain by end of next year, if things do not change, hitting 3 dollars per gallon will not seem to be a crude joke

Headed for extinction!

Friday, October 5th, 2007

This movie starring milla jovovich is in the third episode and I thought great finally the dark umbrella corporation is meeting their end but I spoke too soon, a fourth instalment may be on their way.

What makes this grade B movie stands out is milla jovovich, she has the look of a woman that’s been through hell on earth yet still look good.I do not want to give away too much in this third episode except it’s a more predictable plot.

However this film are able to draw the dangers of cloning technology and mass degradation of life on this planet.I wonder really which comes first but really it does not matter much if the good guys win , right?

We are dependent on the resources of big governments and coroporations that is more and less self serving. If we are not careful in managing the technology and natural resources, indeed look at dolly the sheep cloning and  deforestation of our planet and many other threatening our survival.

Facing extinction becomes self fulfilling, and we will not have a kick ass Super babe like Jovovich to save the day.Meanwhile let’s wait for the fourth instalment to see her going up against the Head of Umbrella Corp..(Opps I’m revealing too much:)

End of cheap oil

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

The word “cheap oil” seems like a cruel joke now but not months ago when oil was trading around $60 a barrel.

Experts cited that oil prices will rise above $85 by end of 2007 and more than $100 a barrel by next year.People seem to talk about oil price by hearsay from their friends and gas attendents but no one really got a clear picture, if the analyst got trouble figuring it out, what makes you think that the man on the street know any better.

A few points that bystanders make when talking about oil markets almost got me fooled like “Damn, it’s those big oil companies trying to push prices up” but if companies like Exxon control less than 10% of the production, where’s the logic?

And when I tried to talk about peak oil , people normally give me a weird look like I’m from another planet. It shows how deluded men has come to be and I’m not surprised.
Here’s the deal: Peak oil is when global oil production began to peak and then decline.

The current oil production is 85 million barrels per day from depleting oilfields & producers are already struggling to maintain this figure. What if we consume more than 85 million barrels in the near future whereas production figures remain the same?

IEA(International energy Agency) suggest that the supply and demand gap continue to widen but the public remains in Oz land thinking that the market will resolve the problem, how does it resolve when we can neither recycle or grow oil, nobody’s saying.

If you think 80USd a barrel is expensive, try 300USD by the year 2015 when EIA estimates the world will be consuming 97 million barrels per day.So nowadays sadly 80USD a barrel is considered cheap, please enjoy while it lasts

Solar energy 2007

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

This year solar power 2007 held in long beach california offers us  some information of the current market. So let us review the past year solar market.

In 2006 PV market production was dominated by Japan.which accounted for more than 30% for manufactured cells but Germany dominated installations with 55% of the world total. Both Japan and Germany which are manufacturing and installation leaders have to maintain their  lead which will be more difficult in the coming years.

 Silicon bites

High silicon prices will take a dent of traditional solar panel makers which depended on affordable wafers to maintain their profit margins. But fear not as prices goes higher for silicon, companies that conserve silicon by making thin film modules and those that do not rely on silicon will make the highest profits.

Look out for companies like First solar that is not dependent on silicon to make or break them. But good news is that silcon shortage will be over in the next 1 to 3 years.

Is Canada the wild card?

Monday, October 1st, 2007

It’s been some time since oil has broken 80USD a barrel, it will not be too far off in thinking that it will hit 100usd.When one look at the peak oil production at global scale, the price of  oil ever increasing seems coming more real.

If USA ever think of attacking Iran, price will definitley shoot up to 130USD a barrel .Talk about being in harmsway for the civilians pockets. It’s definitely not positive for most of us who travel daily to work and import their food from overseas.

Down here in Singapore, our bus fares have already been adjusted this month, public transportation is a norm cause the high price of owning private vehicles in our island state.

I believe small economies survival like ours depends on big countries like China and USA  management of their energy resources. In China now, there’s an exercise that one should plant trees depending on how much carbon one use for travelling planes or cars.

The 3 top exporters of oil to USA is nigeria ,mexico and canada as of today. One may think  USA imported the most oil form mid east, it may be so in the past but not the recent years.OPEC petroleum imports has been dropping since the 1960’s.

Canada seems to be the best option for the energy sources for USA, not forgetting China is going to move into the act too investing in the oil sand region.Nigeria and mexico are beset with problems so they are out for now.

The last 5 years have seen a spike in  25% in petroleum imports from Canada to USA.This has prompted oil companies to realise the potential in canada as a source of energy to USA.The next battle for energy will be fought in Canada and this will not be fought with guns
