Seeing green in Google!

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

One of the biggest challenge of fossil decline is whether our high tech industry can survive without it.Top Search engine leader Google is leading the way to stay green. It’s planning to spend hundreds of millions to help drive down electricity costs made from renewable energy below the price of coal.

This project is called Renewable Energy Cheaper than coal, is hiring engineers and paving the way for solar and and wind power.Running their system and networks on electricity and selling what is left to the power grid.

Their goal is to produce one gigawatt of renewable energy that is cheaper than coal and it’s to be done in years and not decades a statement released by Larry Page, Google co-founder. One Gigawatt can power up a whole city like San francisco.

More high tech companies not only in silcon valley but worldwide should follow Google lead in the use of sustainable energy. It’s a good example that big business can and able to make a big difference in the way that shaped our consumption of energy

Solar shares burning bright

Monday, November 26th, 2007

A sense of reality hits me when I realised my utility bills has increased.I guess it’s the same reaction worldwide, gosh Oil prices hitting 100USD and the bills just have to go up.

Living in a small island city like Singapore has make me realise how vulnerable I’m .A place without natural resources especially fossil fuel is really not a good sign as Oil is the main driver of modern economies.

Then I noted that many investors have jump on the Solar stock track which is a logical decision. When utility bills goes up ,shares of solar companies reflects upward trend.Lots of hopes are placed on Rowsley company who done a reverse takeover of a solar business. The investor is a local stockmarket whiz but still the choices of stockpicks overseas like USA still dominates in the long run.

The reason one do not see a solar roof  on top of every house here or USA is the cost.
It’s great to wake up on a sunday morning without receiving a utility bill but luckily the days are not far off when this may be a reality.

The facts are electrical rates are going up, solar costs are coming down and it definitely a harbinger of good news in the energy market. So hang on your solar shares, the ride has just started.

ASEAN Oil cooking?

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

With the closing of ASEAN summit, singapore PM lee highlighted the rising oil price concerns as this will impact the social fabric of the society with the lower income groups being the most vulnerable.

Indeed, many leaders in Asia pacific region are concerned about the rise in oil price in the recent months. With ASEAN integrated economically, this will have an adverse effects of the mass populace who are living in the poverty level that needs abundant and cheap energy to uplift their plights.

Singapore being the most successful economies in South East asia is a reflection of how high energy price will impact on our living costs bringing food and transportation up.A successful economy cannot resolve the problems that is dependable on oil imports for her energy needs.

Mynammar seems to be sore thumb in the human rights issues and I believe the Oil politics is an important factor that ASEAN cannot ignored in the medium and long term prosperity of the region. It’s really a difficult route to tread between human rights and economic progress,

ASEAN summit has got all their chefs ready for the new kitchen with all the food and spices ready, now where’s the cooking oil?

ASEAN going green!

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

The 13th ASEAN summit held in singapore shows promise of our region integration economically and brings various groups of people closer.ASEAN declarations on the environment is very important so I decide to highlight some of this :

Declaration on Envrionmental sustainabilty:

-No nuke rebuke:Controvesy surrounding the use of nuclear power got the green light alongside with solar, hydo, wind power.Nuclear energy use are subjected to international safety standards.

-Go green:Increasing the forest cover of ASEAN region by 10 million hectares by 2020.

-Drinking water:Halve the number of people without access to clean drinking water by 2010.

-Clear the air:annual haze should be dealt withpublic awareness and law enforcement.

-Hug a tree:Loss of biodiversity in the ASEAN region should be reduced by 2010.

-Helping hand:Get more aid in terms of financing, technology from developed countries in accordance of UN agreements on climate change.

Fury of the King of Spain

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

The recent outburst from the Spanish King Juan Carlos telling President Chaves to shut up at the Ibero-American summit in Santiago, Chile tells us the state of affairs of Venezuela.

Chavez ired the King by calling Aznar a facist who did a coup in 2002 that temporaily removed Chavez from power. This is just a tip of the iceberg that strained relations between Venezuela and her former colonial master. The Oil politics will shaped the development between Spain and Venezuela too.

Many folks out there has a love hate relationship with this Chavez guy, one camp like his audacity in standing up against US power interests and another dislike his way of being too direct and hurt Venezuela foreign relations with other countries especially USA.

Venezeula is still a developing country with problems and to insulate herself with her new found oil wealth is not realistic in the long term.In a globalised world, having oil wealth does not guarantee long term prosperity and progress for any country.

Just last weekend OPEC meeting, the Chavez cannon shot off again of an impending strike against Iran will push oil to 200USD per barrel. He cited the reason for any aggression is due to Oil and want to stop any increase of oil production.Saudi king however wants the politization of Oil to stop .He emphasied that Oil energy is to be used for prosperity for the world and not the source of conflicts.

Chavez will be the media spotlight for some years to come so long as he control the Oil supplies of his country. And the fury of the Spanish King will not stopped from him but spread to the other world leaders as Chavez anti-american stance grow stronger from dedollarization and selling pricey Oil barrels to US

Monkeying around!

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

When I heard that scientist had a 9 year old monkey cloned and drew it stem cells,it send a chill down my spine.Cloning technology is being funded with petro energy if one is able to see beyond the superficial lab test.Back in year 2000. a monkey named tetra was a clone too

Tetra was produced by a process called ‘embryo splitting’:
a)An egg from a mother and a sperm fro the father was used to create a fertilised egg.

b)After the embryo grows into eight cells, researchers split into 4 identical embryos each consists of 2 cells.

c)The four embryos then implanted into surrogate mothers hence a single embryo becomes 4 embryos, all genetically identical.

This technology given our energy scarce world is a mixed blessings, will it used to clone cheap labour army after fossil decline or will it strictly limited to animal experiment to benefit mankind?

Btw the monkey was named tetra cause it’s the only 1 out of the fourth that survived.

Red Dragon conserving!

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

China rural population has never been exposed to this level of knowledge about overseas development due to the advent of TVs, radio and net. This presents a unique challenge to the leadership as rural masses wants to catch up with their urban counterparts in pursuit of the ‘good life’.

Energy is the cornerstone of all modern developments and it only has so much in our world. Hence environmental concerns are secondary to all this but fortunately china leadership realised this and promoted a “conservation culture” by President Hu to the 17th party congress.

The dragon been consuming energy at an alarming rate and her heavy dependence on coal make her the second largest greenhouse gas emitter. And will probably surpass America by end of the year to become the world worst polluter.

So a national strategy needs to be implemented fast in the midst of all this,11th Five Year Plan(2006-2010), the chinese governement set up ambitous targets cutting energy consumption per umit of GDP by 20% by 2010,reducing pollutant discharges hy 10% decreasing water consumption per unit of industrial output by 30% and raising the forestry coverage rate to 20% of total land area.

This will not be easy to accomplish as the mainland needs to tackle balancing environmental issues with economic development , but in the medium and long term important to the survival of china and our fragile planet, the western world being longer in the industrial settings and manage to achieve certain degree of legalism and institutions monitoring of gashouse emission should not expect China with her huge populace and other host of problems to do the same thing overnight which western world took decades.

India smart Oil

Monday, November 12th, 2007

This is the fifth day of deepavali festival, a hindu faith and I decide to talk about India involvment in Oil.Rise of india is a ‘Jaggernaut’ force that no one can stop.

The hindu god named krishna also called jagganath, in religous procession, devotees will throw themselves into the wagon which the statue Krishna was placed subjecting themselves to the god.Hence the word Jaggernaut came about which mean a strong advancing force which will crush anything in front of it

India has been growing 10% the last 2 years and only behind china by 1% .Growing resurgence has seen many smart indian returnees from abroad into the IT sector. This spillover to her energy sector boosted her increase in petro engineers too.

However all this means much more energy India will need to harness to propel her ever growing economy compared to 2 decades ago. National company like ONGC(Oil national and Gas company) is doing her part to drill oil worldwide just her IT cousins Infoysys are doing a good job at outsourcing software development.

In-situ combustion(ISC) process employed by ONGC help to recover heavy crude oil are expected to be increase in the future as the Oil is getting more difficult to drill as it gets deeper. The company will be awarded large blocks of oil in exchange for her efforts in Venezuela and other mid east countries as time goes by.

Venezuela seems to be the dark horse in the oil market controlled by Chavez administeration now.She holds more than 1 trillion barrels of heavy oil but more than
50% cannot be recovered by today’s technology.

Will India engineers save the world from huge oil price increase?Maybe in the short term
but even they can’t turn the tide of decreasing oil reserves and produce new oil.
