Is going Nuclear the way out?

Monday, January 14th, 2008

With the decline of fossil fuel, everyone from the world leaders to the gas attendents are looking for the ONE energy that will make the transition a smooth one without denting the world economy.

Indonesia our neighbour is looking on to building nuclear station and the west too of course have been studying the nuclear path for quite some time. But is it really a feasible one given the hazards and upside risk of destruction involved. The ukraine reactor leak is still fresh in everyone’s minds and from the last report, that city is still a ghost town. It’s creepy that you can’t even heard the birds humming and sounds of the crickets. The dead silence is overwhelming for the reporters who were there.

However western European countries like France and Sweden are already using this to for 70% of their electrical supply. And they seem to be making it affordable too for the mass public. So why not? After all, one uranium released the energy equivalent of more than 5,000 barrels of oil.

Hundreds of nuclear power plants have been around the western world for more than 4 decades and plans are being made to build more if red tapes are lifted to make this a private initiative free from Government intervention. But is it wise for humanity in the long run?

To make nuclear energy a mainstream ONE to replace fossil fuel worldwide will take a leap of faith on both the technology and safety standards that’s acceptable for the public. One need to the weigh the pros and cons on this nuclear way and make sure big governments and Coroporations are not jeapordising the health of our future generations by holding them accountable.

But if you seek safety, it is on the shore.

Beyond Indo haze

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Coming from an island state like singapore, we face problems like burning and slashing of forest by our neighbour every now and then and we can’t really do much but sit it out till the haze pass us by.

Indeed forest fires are not limited to developing states like Indonesia but also Australia and USA but what makes the difference is the commercial motive behind developing countries.Of course the governments does their best to stop illegal logging and all that but one need more incentives  to lure the peasants away from profiteers who has no regards for the rule of law and the environment.

People need more than just laws but incentives to turn away from quick profits in exchange for environmental hazards that pollute our air and release more carbons that our fragile planet can take. Institutions not plagued by corruption are the final steps that will eliminate future destruction of our rainforests.

Haze are bad for our lungs and the cost of the economies of nearby cities affected by it are not even factored in.People will tend to stay at homes and not go out and there will be more workers taking sick leave due to the pollutants. And this requires more than an eye rub to resolve this hazy problems.

Hope that 2008 will not be a hazy year for all..

Libya plot

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

It seems like nowadays Libya is now starting to pull her weight around the world with her oil wealth making inroads to housing and other sectors except now she’s willing to throw 255 billions worldwide instead of just her domestic market.

Sovereign funds by nations  are now under scrutiny cause of national security and other economic concerns.Especially with the war on terror, Libya will be under the spotlight of US and other countries in regards of her investments.

Needless to say, Libya is sitting on the largest Africa oil reserves and because of  terror links was left untouched by western interest for 2 decades. This may not be so in the near future as Libya will be more involved in the struggle against terrorism if she does not want to be isolated further in the international arena.

The Oil factor in Libya will be a looming problem or a opportunity depending on what the new administeration after Bush sees it.But it will not be easy one to resolve considering US based their foreign policies now based not only on human rights abuses but also energy and other economic interests.

Libya presently has been extolled by the bush administeration as a reformed terrorist state hence bringing it 30 odds billions of barrels of oil reserves into the market. How will it develop with the rest of the world in the future will much depends on Libya part to renounce terror..

China coal scene..

Monday, January 7th, 2008

In China where more people seems to be inspiring for a western middle class lifestyle bombarded by media, one wonders where’s the energy going to come from?Alternative energy is part of the big energy palns for the middle kingdom but it will not be enough.

Coal will be the one in the domestic market in China that will help to forestall any impending energy crisis that will slow down the economy of major chinese cities. This will be forwarded as a parallel plans along with wind energy to fulfil the rising demand for energy.

The downside to all this is the environmental damage like greenhouse gas and smoke pollution that will spread all over china.Again the solution will not be an easy one as western countries like USA try to balance economic growth with energy demands that’s not fossil based.

End of 2007 plans are already made with Germany to explore clean energy production and research amounting to 10 billion , not a small sum by any means, so it’s not all hopeless for the China to wean off coal or even oil, but they must do this fast and views it as a long term goal not only for themselves but the fragile planet we’re living in

End of Oil equates rise of faith?

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

With the war on terror raging worldwide and the decline of european demographics, will faith revival replace liberalism that was so widespread wordwide in last century with abundent cheap energy?

One can see the rise of anti-islamic sentiments moving up hand in hand with islamist violence.Right wing christian movements in america seems to be getting their say in the public space like abortion rights as they fear what happens to their european counterparts will fall upon them if they lost their religion and cultures.

Oil is part of the equation in this whole picture and religions may turn out to be the final outcome ironically in the 21st century. How will this affect America and even our whole world remains to be seem? But Christian America is not such a foreign idea compared to Europeans who seems lost the whole plot as beautiful cathedrals in france may end up as museum relics of past identity of their forefathers.

Christian america may not be as willing partners for oil to make compromises regarding freedom of religious faiths to appease their islamic rich oil states .
Maybe the burden of the cross will be pick up by the Americans where Europeans left.

Profiting from Peak oil

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

The second day of 2008 really can be kind of drag for me especially this.So New Year and new hopes..what’s new under the sun you may ask.,however this presents a good chance to rake in some money in the coming year as oil hits new time high as Iran send shivers to oil markets worldwide.

Canadian oil sands seem to be getting many investors interested especially this year but one need to know what companies to invest to cash in on the ride. One must be educated about oil markets so I suggest hitting to your bookstores or Amazon to armed yourself more knowledge aboout middle east geopolitics and oil in general.

There are exploration companies who drill oil but actually emitting less greenhouse that harms our fragile earth than conventional methods. One can invest in this kind of companies without damaging our environment in a big way.One cannot have our cake and eat it…either sworn off oil 100% or use it to develop and sustain our modern economy but with CAUTION.

Public companies that are involved in Canadian oil sands are divided in to 3 categories:

a)Mature

b)Speculative

c)Emerging small firms

So tread with care and have a bonanza this year but also invest with a green mindset.Cheers!
