Prepare for a powered down world?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Many of you folks out there reading this blog and other oil materials knows about the importance of fossil fuel so I won’t go into details about it.But to the well prepared, the transition towards a less consumer based fuelled by more pricey oil barrels would be less painful especially to the urban folks like me.

So how do average joes like me get prepared, I list out 3

a)Awareness of the energy depletion and the spillover effects on our modernites way of  life

b)Get a religion preferably a non new age one to instill some hope

c)Get a guard dog like german shepherd to protect yourself especially those who have no firearms.

The above are just simplified way of dealing with the new or rather old world that is coming back to us like a boomerang.Of course for those who have deeper pockets you can do more like buying a small piece of land in the countryside to hold out till the initial storm subsides but most city slickers cannot and do not wish to move into rural areas so  getting along with rural neighbours with a different mindset and outlook of life can be a challenge too.

Hitting 100USD and blah..

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

Yeah, all the predictions of oil hitting 100 bucks have came true and why does anybody not surprised.Amidst all the election fever from USA to Malaysia, our energy demand went up and the only outcome is this so what’s new?

Down here in Singapore we are faced with higher inflation this year , the crude price is a large factor for this as we import everything from food to gasoline.Though our government tax budget was lauded by analysts here and other asian cities like Hongkong and Taipei for being pragmatic and pro business, we cannot fight the inflation rate, this is the predicament living in a small island state.

We have our desalination plants and get the water from our sea because we wanted some independence from our water supply coming from Malaysia but unfortunately the world has not figured out whether one can grow oil or not.

Raising the banner!

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

I’ve just raised a banner on the top of my site replacing the adsense that seems to be a distraction more than an income source. The banner leads to a store and an extension of my blog which I hoped visitors will go and take a look.

Daily Oil Blog Gear is officially open this year!

Gaining and losing weight

Monday, February 11th, 2008

After Chinese new year, I found myself putting on some weight, mind you it just the fifth day with the sweet BBQ pork meat and other tibits.it seems unevitable that I need to lose weight fast.
Many people seems to take medical leave cause of stomach upset due to overeating which is never a good practice. The Oil economy has done her job of feeding masses with rich food.Obesity tends to be the norm in the developed parts of our world raising a generation of consumers of food that hardly knows where the supply and process of the calories comes from except in supermarkets.

Sedentary living in the cities make things worse for us taking in so much high calorie meat based diet without working off like running daily will take a toil in our health.Ok..that’s it I’m hitting the pool to swim it off

Celebrating lunar new year!

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

It’s one of this day again celebrating Chinese lunar New year again down here in Singapore. With lion dancing and gluttony for the next few days for the chinese community here.

Weird though it’s more of a village celebration with the lions scaring off the evil spirits in the chinese folklore but now the art spread to most urban cities with chinese populace when celebrating the spring festival.

I’ll be back on next monday but would not expect any heavy eating as I believe it’s bad for one’s health, days of poor villagers scraping for a good meal for the whole family during New Year has become endless dining for fine gourmet which I think defeats the meaning of the family gathering , I don’t mind more red packets though:)

Looking back 2007

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

All in all 2007 we did see something that’s not all doom and gloom in our petro world except for higher oil prices down here in sunny singapore…

Ok I’m kidding, the rise in taxi fares here did spoil my Xmas mood and the latest statistics released shown that inflation from food to transportation will go up xxxx% here next year…don’t they always?

I sincerely hope that the Iran nuclear issues will be sorted out next year or else there will be more roller coaster ride for all of us and it’s going to be a global shockwave like Iraq few years ago.

I will be posting on the 1st of 2008 so please take care and stay off any oily food on the coming New Year Eve :)Drive safely too ciao!!

Bali irony

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

After the end of bali climate conference, I’m thinking why not just do video conferencing and emailed/fax the agreements intead of flying 12,000 people all over the world there producing carbon emissions if it’s a watered down statement.

I think the importance of the conference should not be trivalised but at the same time agreed that most particpants to bali produced  some eco challenges to the island that may not be well equipped compared to other developed countries.

Waste like plastic bags and paper cups and plates by the throng of particpants and we are not even including year end tourists that’s bathing the sunshine and sea of island of the gods. It’s ironic to see that the particpants will travel by taxis and chauffered cars to the conference pumped by petro polluting  the crisp bali air.

Indeed it becomes hypocripsy to go through all this fanfare in Bali  , such beauty but polluting it to make a statement to stop global carbon increase of pollutants.

My Green Site!

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

As you can see, I’ve just installed a statscounter on my right hand sidebar to keep track of my site carbon emission and also offsetting it at the same time.

It’s pretty neat and fit into my blog nicely:)

A new landscape!

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

Yesterday I started my new job as a landscape worker, this is to bring in some income as this blog is in red, meaning no income:) ,life is always are filled with surprises .This new job exposed me to the nature unlike my previous jobs which I think may come in handy in a Peak Oil world.

As I’m writing this, my back is aching and trying to get over the heat in humid singapore. I think farming in our urban environment may not be a far fetch thing as food becomes more scarce and expensive but the problem is farming enough food for all city dwellers.Car parks and other commercial lands has to be put into use in that direction but no all lands can be converted to arable farming.

Globalization has widened the income between the rich and poor and many foreign workers has come to our shore to eke a living as singapore flung her doors wide open to unskilled and skilled workers.Having come into contact with them in my landscaping job, I’ve come to learn that these workers are industrious and able to take hardships unlike developed city slickers like me:(

Living in a peak oil world will not be a huge problem from this workers coming from rural areas in India, they may even teach us a thing or two about simple living.Give them a shovel and they can work under the hot sun without complaints.
