Monkeying around!

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

When I heard that scientist had a 9 year old monkey cloned and drew it stem cells,it send a chill down my spine.Cloning technology is being funded with petro energy if one is able to see beyond the superficial lab test.Back in year 2000. a monkey named tetra was a clone too

Tetra was produced by a process called ‘embryo splitting’:
a)An egg from a mother and a sperm fro the father was used to create a fertilised egg.

b)After the embryo grows into eight cells, researchers split into 4 identical embryos each consists of 2 cells.

c)The four embryos then implanted into surrogate mothers hence a single embryo becomes 4 embryos, all genetically identical.

This technology given our energy scarce world is a mixed blessings, will it used to clone cheap labour army after fossil decline or will it strictly limited to animal experiment to benefit mankind?

Btw the monkey was named tetra cause it’s the only 1 out of the fourth that survived.

Deepavali Day

Here in singapore, we have a national holiday when our indian counterparts celebrate Deepavali .It’s a hindu festival where light overcomes darkness.

I watched a program called G-d is green recently shown here. It’s about how religions can help to reduce greenhouse emisssions worldwide and talked about hinduism from India too.

The host of the program from UK asked a few Indian folks about this issue and got some interesting reply..basically the answers he got was somehow fatalistic about the global consumer use of fossil energy and the harm it’s doing for us if we do not find ways to reverse the growing trend.

India has just started the industrial revolution in her cities nationwide and will compete and consume energy with China and the western world. How much damage and how long this trend continue remains to be seen..

I wish all hindus a happy deepavali and may the light shine forth in our search for cleaner and sustainable energy.

Headed for extinction!

This movie starring milla jovovich is in the third episode and I thought great finally the dark umbrella corporation is meeting their end but I spoke too soon, a fourth instalment may be on their way.

What makes this grade B movie stands out is milla jovovich, she has the look of a woman that’s been through hell on earth yet still look good.I do not want to give away too much in this third episode except it’s a more predictable plot.

However this film are able to draw the dangers of cloning technology and mass degradation of life on this planet.I wonder really which comes first but really it does not matter much if the good guys win , right?

We are dependent on the resources of big governments and coroporations that is more and less self serving. If we are not careful in managing the technology and natural resources, indeed look at dolly the sheep cloning and  deforestation of our planet and many other threatening our survival.

Facing extinction becomes self fulfilling, and we will not have a kick ass Super babe like Jovovich to save the day.Meanwhile let’s wait for the fourth instalment to see her going up against the Head of Umbrella Corp..(Opps I’m revealing too much:)

It’s MAC time:)

My brother has left his ibook at home temporaily till we buy a new PC or Mac which I much preferred.I think Mac is much better than PC which is less buggy and user friendly which I can concentrate my blogging in peace without worrying about virus and troubleshooting.

If one thing about energy crisis in the next 2 decades that would bring internet costs up , then Mac is a good computer that will save one’s precious time and money relating to it.I’m wondering will pay by hour be back if monthly package by ISPs grow unaffordable.I’m keeping my fingers cross.

Trying period..sigh

My dear readers, my PC unexpectedly crashed on Sat and the maintainence store just called me to tell me all my harddisk ,motherboard and RAM has COLLAPSE.I do not  have a choice either I buy a new PC and will have to do my blogging in the internet cafe which I’m doing now.

This is a sort of scenerio which is likely during peak oil which less energy means less time spent online and maybe even restricted sales of PCs. Price of internet package will definitely shoot up making most households unable to afford hopefully this will not come true. Will internet cafes become centers of peak oil net infrastrusture  where limited usage will be the norm?

Now I’ve to go to the store downtown salvage my remaining CPU  , my postings will decrease  till I get a new PC

Looking out the carpark

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Reading the newspapers today about crude oil prices rises above 80USD, a sense of how things will change as I looked out my flat facing the carpark. Will less cars be there in the near future?

In Singapore , most of us live in high rise public flats, a carpark is always a stone throw away. It’s a waste of space and not a pleasant sight clogging the spaces that land scarce island city  I’m  living in

With the end of cheap oil,the car parks will be lesser maybe even replace by gardens of potatoes or cabbages.Who knows? As of now…I look outside the carpark in disbelief as oil price continue to surge

Will our grandkids return to farming?

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

I’m really quite worried as our forefathers tried hard to a make a living tilling the land as peasants, land that was not even theirs and dream of a better future for their offspring Now with the decline of oil and no energy able to replace it,are our grandkids going to return to farming?

A century of oil backed growth have led many peasants seeking opportunities in the cities and the reverse will take place when the system collapse.
Will slavery and feudalism be back? I dreaded the day when mass populace will subscribe to the serf system to eke 3 meals a day. Nations reduced to mini states as central governments go down.Warlords and piracy will be back no doubt but facts are stranger than fiction and believe me…when that time comes..
Anarchy and brute force will rule the day..storytellers in the alleys will spin tales about how men was once civilized by the oil age..this all seem like a hollywood flick…only time will tell
